Lead Generation

Leads are like the food and water of a web project, helping grow it in the beginning and then sustaining it long term.

There are dozens of ways to find leads on the web. Most web marketing firms tend to focus on only a few while we believe in diversity to keep lead quality high and lead costs under control. To simplify things, we group lead types into three categories.

  1. Paid Actions – Simply put, these programs cost X to get Y. Sometimes Y is a click, sometimes Y is an impression of an ad and sometimes Y is an actual lead. Most people are used to paid search as the most popular type of paid action services. Google makes billions of dollars a year of this flagship product so there is no wonder it is what most people think of, however, there are many other options out there. Affiliate marketing, banner ads, referral networks…the list goes on. The key here is to diversify and be smart about what is being spent and to monitor the quality of the leads that come in.
  2. SEO – One of the most recognizable terms on the web. "Search Engine Optimization" is the optimization and internal/external promotion of pages throughout your website for specific keywords and phrases. This is done all in an attempt to come up at the top of search engine results when someone searches for a term or phrase important to your product or service. Trust me when I say this is far too complicated to try and understand, instead, have your decision fall on top of the SEO Company’s track record. Have them show you examples that matter for words that will create leads for you. There is no use in ranking number one for a word that nobody searches for. A pro should be able to show you the ranking and then show you the statistics behind what having that ranking did for lead generation.
  3. Social Marketing – Facebook, Twitter, Digg and Reditt are just a few examples of social hot spots that have become the new place to market your services and products. Walk a fine line and do not be labeled as a spammer and you can really do wonders for promoting yourself in these circles. While these sites are free to post and create content on, it takes hours of management and tactical planning to successfully run a PR campaign through these social settings. Be sure to manage your message properly when you have anyone run this type of a program for you since once something is posted in your name it lives forever.

Stop guessing with your lead generation strategies and start be aggressive about getting your brand and message in front of the right people. Track your results. Get rid of what is not working and introduce new and exciting product and service offers all the time so that going back to the same places has more purpose then just flogging the same thing over and over. Lastly, stick to what you do and let a qualified professional do your lead generation. They will get more out of your dollar…even after they put in their management fees.
